Name: Death
Canon: Sandman (DC comics)
Original or Alternate Universe: CR AU
Canon Point: 1 year before the DC reboot. WHAT WAS THAT EVEN?
Number: Randomize me

Setting: THE DC UNIVERSE I swear I do play characters from coherent canons!
History: In the beginning there was Destiny. Then, before the first living thing was born, Death came to be. She was followed by the other five Endless (Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delight).

At first, being Death wasn’t too bad a deal. She was and remains responsible for birth as well as death. Everything was new and living things were born and died with as much enthusiasm as they undertook any other new experience. Eventually life began to fear and despise Death. This made her rather depressed and eventually led to her outright refusing to do her job.

Eventually a mortal tracked her down and made her look at the chaos that had arisen when nothing down to the simplest bacteria could die. That was all it took for her to go back to work. However, she became hard and brittle until the day a young girl asked her how she would like it if it happened to her.

That was when Death decided to spend one day out of every century as a mortal to learn about life. After the first day, she had some rather unflattering words for herself. The most important message was that what people really needed when they died was a friend. After that she became a lot cheerier and learned to like her job, since she gets to meet all sorts of interesting people.

One of the hardest parts of the job was when Death had to collect her younger sister Despair. Little is known of the circumstances behind the first Despair’s death, but as the concept of despair cannot be killed, a new aspect of it took up the mantle of Endless. Though Death was sad about what happened, she didn’t let it get her down in the long run and accepted the new Despair readily.

The Endless are far from the most functional family. Her beloved brother Dream had a son Orpheus. After his wife died on their wedding day, Orpheus begged Death to allow him to enter into the Underworld unharmed. Death was reluctant, but ultimately gave her nephew what he wanted. It… didn’t work out so well. Orpheus was unsuccessful in retrieving his wife, but was still unable to die for millennia.

Things got even worse after Destruction walked out on the family in the 17th century. The siblings already seldom saw each other, but it got much worse once Destruction was no longer there to smooth over arguments. Death continues to visit her siblings, but they remained uncomfortable entering each other’s realms.

In the early 20th century, a group tried to imprison Death so that nothing could die (hey, the last time it happened was roughly ten billion years ago, they couldn’t be expected to know). However, Death is not easily caught and they accidentally imprisoned her younger brother Dream instead. This caused Death no end of worry. Especially when he didn’t call her for help once he finally got out of the fish bowl seventy years later. That got a loaf of bread thrown at him. This started a turbulent period in Dream’s life that Death did her best to help him through. Unfortunately, this ultimately wasn’t enough. Dream reached the point where he had to change more than he could or die, and found himself faced with only one option. Although it broke her heart to claim him, she knew she had to comfort him along the way. While she did mourn his passing, she once again welcomed the new incarnation with open arms and continued to be a nurturing presence. Since that time, she has continued at her job without particularly notable incident.

Personality: The most immediately obvious thing about Death is that she is a little ray of sunshine. She’s very good at finding the best in people and events. She takes joy in the simple things, which has not been diminished even after two years of being essentially mortal. While mortal she has previously expressed the sentiment that apples are amazing and generally raved over little things like food. She figures it’s just as easy to be nice to people as it is to be creepy, and it’s definitely a lot more fun.

She also loves absolutely everybody. Being Death means that she knows everyone, and is able to understand them. Since "No one is creepy from the inside" she can’t help loving people. Additionally, she is genuinely interested in people’s lives. Not surprisingly, she will quickly throw herself into getting to know the rest of the passenger, no matter how curmudgeonly they might be. She has long considered getting to meet so many neat people to be the best part of her job, and takes particular joy in getting to meet people when they aren’t terrified on account of having just died. Two years of mortality have given her time to form many close attachments and led her to take on a somewhat grandmotherly persona. With extended contact with mortals, she is quite prone to beginning to view them as family. Teaching people that there is something to them worth loving has become something of a recurring theme in her extended contact with mortals.

Despite the usual fearful reactions, she is a very down-to-Earth anthropomorphic personification. Death is a steady job, and she’s had plenty of time to grow accustomed to it. Out of all the Endless, she is by far the most well adjusted (admittedly, this isn't hard). She empathizes with people, but she also knows when they need someone to pull them out of a funk. And if that takes the form of throwing a loaf of bread at them, so be it. She’s even less likely to put up with that sort of nonsense from people she is particularly close to. This is quite the opposite of a lack of patience though, motivated by an honest desire to help. That said, it is possible to make her angry, and going out of one’s way to hurt people is a good way to do so.

Although she enjoys her job a great deal, she does take it very seriously. Having seen firsthand what happens when she doesn’t do it right, she knows full well her place in the universe. Fortunately, late developments in Mayfield have given her the knowledge that the majority of her self is still doing her job at home. She is generally quite uncompromising in her responsibilities (she can’t afford not to be), but has been known to make exceptions. Notably, she made Hob Gadling unable to die because she felt that Dream needed a friend. There have been other cases of her making exceptions, usually because she has some sort of prior connection to the person, but these are very rare. In the end she knows she has a responsibility to make sure everything runs smoothly.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:

Today we play an exciting game of “nerf ALL the powers!”. Death is an anthropomorphic personification, which is pretty darn far from being human. She is able to control her appearance, including clothing. She generally keeps her appearance somewhat in line with the styles of the current era.

Mortals are only able to see her if she allows them to. In a setting like this, she will generally allow everyone to see her unless she has a compelling reason not to. She also treats walls and doors as suggestions, though generally suggestions she takes. Obviously this will not work on any doors that are impassable for plot reasons. She is also able to teleport (more specifically be in multiple places at once, but we'll say teleporting for this purpose. This can readily be restricted in range. Or completely nerfed if need be. Obviously it will just mysteriously not work for areas that need to be inaccessible because plot)

As Death, she is the most truly immortal of all the Endless. However, since that is rather twinky in a game environment it will be reduced to being free of the lesser inconveniences of mortality such as needing to eat or sleep.

She collects the souls of the deceased with a touch, which is unlikely to come up in game. It should be noted that her touch does not in fact kill. Additionally, she can breathe life into inanimate constructs, which she rarely does. This is presumably right out. She is also stated to have a near omnipotent mastery of sorcery, but this is never clearly explained and also contains the word “omnipotent” so let's just leave that out, shall we?

In terms of mental weaknesses, she still has some lingering reluctance to become involved. However, when she does so, she can be overconfident, forgetting her own limitations when mortal or constrained by a game world.

Appearance: However she wants to look. As a general rule, she is on the short side, with white skin, wild black hair and heavy goth makeup. She also dresses almost exclusively in black.
Age: Ten billion... to one significant digit

AU Clarification: Mayfield offered Death a lot of more human experiences. One of the more notable ones being that she actually knows what it's like to feel helpless. Which she really didn't enjoy. While in those specific circumstances there was nothing she could have done, she did come to the realization that since she is not a full blown force of existence in this state, it would not be disastrous for her to intervene. It's hard to overcome billions of years worth of habit, so she does tend to be reluctant on that front, but she's learning.

One thing that made her more willing to intervene was adding quite a large number of people to those she considers family. Her household as well as her assigned husband's actual granddaughter's household together made a very close family grouping and she was very willing to protect them. She found herself in the role of grandmother and took to it famously. Somewhat related to this was her first experience with romantic love. A new level of human.

With considerable more free time in Mayfield, she found new ways to fill her time. One was baking, rather straightforward. She also developed a tendency to latch onto people as projects of sorts when she thinks they need help coming to see that they are worth loving. Notable among these were a monster and a serial killer.

She also developed a strong distaste for zombies due to a series of undead outbreaks due to poorly controlled regains. Possibly even to the point of them potentially being an exception to her “loves everyone” rule. Maybe.

Finally, Mayfield's endgame revealed that the inhabitants were in fact data copies of the originals. She interpreted this as being a smaller part of the greater whole, which was not a difficult concept to her as she regularly creates independent aspects of herself on her mortal days. This revelation will significantly impact her reaction to being on Tranquility when compared to her arrival in Mayfield. Since she knows that her larger self is still out there somewhere, doing her job, she will not need to worry as much about the fabric of reality.

S A M P L E S
Log Sample:

This wasn't a time to hesitate about whether it was right to intervene. Not with seemingly all the world falling down around her. She had a family here and that meant a whole other set of responsibilities. She trusted Death to be able to take care of himself. But she couldn't go anywhere until the boys were safe.

She moved quickly through the collapsing buildings. It helped that she didn't have to actually walk. And that she could easily just go through any debris that might fall in her path. The people she was looking for though? They couldn't. And Luke was likely to do something incredibly foolish under those circumstances.

“Luke! Slugger!” She called out with all the volume she usually didn't use. This would certainly be easier if she had her full abilities available. Then she could just find everyone. Keep them safe. Of course, if that were still true, it would be extremely unwise for her to do it.

This wasn't the time to ponder that. Family meant bailing people out of their foolish decisions whenever you could. There were a lot of questions to worry about when lives weren't in immediate dangers, but they had become family a long time ago. In this particular moment, it was the only thing any of them could count on.

Comms Sample:

[Death's smiling face appears on the comm screen. She's been enjoying this video option. It's nice, being able to actually see the people she's talking to.]

Well, it looks like we've got a bit of downtime. I say we make the most of it. With how crazy things get, we should definitely all get to know each other for when things got crazy.

So what I think we should do is pack up some salads and sandwiches from the kitchen and take the whole lot down to the oxygen gardens for a picnic. I'll even make cookies!

Secret Agent Agent Susan D'Eath
Plot Infiltrator

Susan D'Eath is a perfectly normal name and she is a perfectly normal concertgoer. There's no Area 54 what are you talking about?

Skill Goals: Secret Agent Training

Olympus Upended
"Teleute"
Investigator

This may just be the Malik Gambit to end all Malik Gambits. She has a perfectly good identity in mythic Greece in the form of Teleute, so she might as well use it while attempting to wrangle the various investigators. This was, apparently, enough to convince the Necromancer Euphrasia of her claims. Death spent the Jaunt providing a wealth of knowledge about millenia of infighting among this particular pantheon.

Retained Skills: None

Pogémon!
Didi
Infiltrator

Didi thinks that Pogemon are adorable, and none are cuter than her particular partner. She's not terribly interested in battling competitively. She's more interested in having fun with her Pogemon partner, who she sees as a fantastic friend. So it was a bit unfortunate when fighting spilled into the streets.

Retained SKills: None

The Haunted Isle
Dia
Infiltrator

Dia is an orca mermaid in the Crownbreaker school. She lost loved ones in the transition to the island and is determined to not let anyone destroy what they've built here. She's a Siren and has been one for a considerable time with all the complications that brings. After Singing for so long, hearing something new that is like Song but not quite is almost impossible to resist. Knowing that she was going to lose to the compulsion eventually, she joined in the expedition to locate the Deepsinger.

CANON HISTORY: Have a wiki
CANON PERSONALITY: The most immediately obvious thing about Death is that she is a little ray of sunshine. She’s very good at finding the best in people and events. She also loves absolutely everybody. Being Death means that she knows everyone, and is able to understand them. Since "No one is creepy from the inside" she can’t help loving people. Additionally, she is genuinely interested in people’s lives. In the end she knows she has a responsibility to make sure everything runs smoothly.

One thing that Death is going to struggle with is the notion that they are being sent to different worlds to interfered. Given the sheer magnitude of her power, she has a general policy of not meddling in mortal lives. Unlike her younger siblings, she generally does actually stick to it. So she is going to disapprove fairly strongly of the fact that the Trumps are playing a game.

POINT OF DEPARTURE: N/A
ABILITIES: So remember how Harry Potter magic was so ill defined that this section started with muffled sobbing? Let's just say... it's probably for the best that this is the last character I am permitted to app.

Today we play an exciting game of “nerf ALL the powers!”. Death is an anthropomorphic personification, which is pretty darn far from being human. She is able to control her appearance, including clothing. (This part probably translates to Wardrobe Manipulation) She generally keeps her appearance somewhat in line with the styles of the current era.

She is also able to be in multiple places at the same time, which is probably best translated into one of the Teleportation skills.

As Death, she is the most truly immortal of all the Endless. However, since that is rather twinky in a game environment it will be reduced to being free of the lesser inconveniences of mortality such as needing to eat or sleep and generally quite difficult to kill.

She collects the souls of the deceased with a touch, which is unlikely to come up in game. It should be noted that her touch does not in fact kill. Additionally, she can breathe life into inanimate constructs, which she rarely does. This is presumably right out.

She is also has a near omnipotent mastery of sorcery. Obviously it will be far from omnipotent in game and avoid any spells that would coincide too closely with any Liminal/Psychic skills. Unfortunately, DC magic somehow manages to be even more “a wizard did it” than Harry Potter. Magic includes manipulation of energy/elements, creation of wards and creation of illusions. More generally, it stems from the interplay of order and chaos and bringing one to the other. It requires a source of magical energy, which in Death's case is internal. Mortal sorcerers generally need a considerable amount of concentration in order to wield magic, which will be an adjustment for her.

INVENTORY; Ankh necklace, two pennies, black jeans, black tanktop
ANYTHING ELSE WE SHOULD KNOW? I am so sorry DC magic is somehow vaguer than Harry Potter magic

Memories

acapriciousthing: (Default)
Generally, the day to day feelings you're going to get off Death are pretty cheery. There's a side dose of wanting to take care of everybody.

Likely clues in memories: Seeing her hands, since few on board have quite her complexion. It should be noted that her siblings generally call her some variant on "Sister" rather than Death.

Deathy Memories

- Reaping memories. Pick a dead famous historical figure and they're in there. Or a not so famous one. Except for very early (universe is roughly a billion years old early) memories, these involve reassuring the frightened recently deceased. For an example of how she deals with just random people, see her fist appearance (CW: child death)
- Or if you want to be really sad, collecting her own siblings (Despair, Dream)
- Dealing with the dead coming back after Lucifer shut down hell
- One day mortal out of every century, always ending in her dying (if you're really feeling morbid!)
- Trying to talk Orpheus out of returning to the underworld to retrieve his wife, but ultimately helping it. (It ended poorly)

Family Memories

- Any number of family meetings that break down into screaming arguments between various siblings
- Taking Delirium to see 101 Dalmations. Del thinks the butter tastes like earwax.
- Trying to calm Delirium down when she's having an episode
- Talking to Destruction Krypton about how anyone could know everything, but it would be unbearable
- Throwing a loaf of bread at Dream because he's whining too much

Mayfield
- Waking up in bed with a skeleton wearing pajamas
- You can get really meta and get Memories of her and Slugger trying to fight off implanted memories!
- Helplessly watching everyone around her succumb to radiation poisoning
- Discussing mutual confusion
- Getting very tired of zombie outbreaks
- Selling makeup and baking brownies for the grandkids (Arya features in this one)
- In general there are a lot of day to day memories of Death Clan, composed of her, Discworld!Death, his actual granddaugther Susan, her fake husband The Riddler who is also somewhat of a little brother to Death and the grandchildren Luke Triton, Little Slugger and Tiffany Aching
